Paideia 2020 is a mid-year intersession offering students in all grades opportunities for unique learning experiences. This document provides an overview of the Paideia program, and a timeline. Please reach out to Lisa Clark, Paideia Coordinator, at if you have any questions.


Teachers develop Paideia programs that are designed to facilitate personal growth and development. Students select and focus on one or two programs of study from a variety of choices. For each year that a high school student attends PVPA, successful completion of a Paideia activity is a credit requirement. This entails attendance at minimum 85% of the class meetings (maximum 2 absences) and successful completion of all goals and products as set by the class leader. Students in grades 7 and 8 engage in core academic classes each morning, and Paideia courses each afternoon.


The school day starts at 8:30a, and ends at 2:50p each day during Paideia (January 13-30, 2020). The day consists of a morning and an afternoon session, and Paideia courses meet daily. The core academic program for grades 7 and 8 continues through Paideia during the morning session, and these students choose afternoon Paideia courses. Courses may be designed for grades 7-8, 9-12, or 7-12. They may be half-day or full-day.

PVPA faculty members are in the process of designing Paideia courses. The Paideia motto is “EXPLORE, CONNECT, CREATE!” The mission is to provide all students opportunities to grow as scholars and artists through intensive immersion and exploration of a discipline. All Paideia courses require students to demonstrate growth and learning through an end product, and to appropriately and respectfully participate. In addition, some Paideia courses provide a significant opportunity for arts/academics integration and enhancement. 


All students will hear about the 2020 offerings during Community Meeting on Friday, December 6, 2019 (2:15-2:50). Registration for Paideia courses occurs online from December 9-13, 2019 on the following schedule:

  • December 9: Grades 7-8 and 12
  • December 10: Add grade 11
  • December 11: Add grade 10
  • December 12-13: All grades

Registration is first-come, first-served, and courses will close as they fill. Students and their parents/guardians will receive an email in January confirming their Paideia course assignments.

On the final day of Paideia (Thursday, January 30, 2020), students and faculty share their work in a showcase that includes performances, presentations, and exhibits. This occurs during the regular school day.


All students choose Paideia courses. Academic Support teachers provide students’ IEP services throughout Paideia, and offer opportunities for students to access additional help with their general coursework if necessary. With the shortened day (school ends at 2:50 daily), this is a great opportunity for any student to catch up on missing work outside of the school day!
