PVPA's arts classes offer students numerous options within the disciplines of dance, theatre, film, vocal and instrumental music, technical theatre, and visual arts. There are courses at all levels in each department, which allows students at all levels of experience and expertise to advance their skills as well as try something new. All seventh grade students are required to take a yearlong arts survey course called ArtsCore in which they rotate through 8-week mini-courses in dance, music, theater, and visual arts. See the PVPA Course Catalog for the most up-to-date list of arts course offerings.
Formal and informal performances are generated primarily through PVPA’s arts coursework with some groups requiring additional rehearsals and commitments outside of school. See PVPA’s production calendar for listings of public performances. Informal performances include Open Mics, which are great opportunities for students and staff members to share their love of the arts with the PVPA community. In addition, the arts are infused into the curriculum school-wide. Academic teachers feature integrated arts units that culminate in performances and events, and arts teachers use open mic and other school events as venues to share class projects.
Audition- and interview-based courses are available for students in grades 7-12, and these requirements are indicated in the Course Catalog. As a school committed to equal access for all, auditions are open to all students in the community regardless of race, color, sex, gender identity, religion, national origin, limited English proficiency, sexual orientation, disability, or housing status. Auditions are announced through PVPA’s weekly newsletter, Friday Notes, and via email to all enrolled and newly-accepted students. Auditions for fall semester and full-year courses generally occur in the prior spring with supplemental auditions in late August as needed. Auditions for Paideia and spring semester courses generally occur in the late fall.
