English as a Second Language Program

The ESL Program at PVPA acknowledges the breadth and depth that can be achieved when core academic classes are infused with the Arts as integral to the learning process. PVPA uses a Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) approach that supports English learners within their core academic classes as well as through English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. The Guiding Principles of Language Development at PVPA are taken from the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Consortium. The English Language Education Coordinator works to provide dual-language communication to students and families while training faculty to support their multilingual students in accessing the totality of the material in each course.

PVPA believes that the role of educators is to craft instruction that builds upon the assets multilingual students bring from home. In doing so, all parties can participate in shaping the education of an increasingly rich and diverse student population.
