7-8 Dance Education Lab (DEL) (DAN148)

Do you love to dance and love kids? Learn how to teach dance in elementary schools and become a dance mentor for younger students in this course, which takes PVPA students into local elementary schools. Students are trained in the award-winning Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) teacher-training model based in NYC, which emphasizes a creative approach to choreography by making connections to literature, social studies and science. There is a performance at the end of the semester. Strong leadership skills are necessary, as well as an enthusiastic attitude! Prior dance experience is recommended. If PVPA is in remote mode during the spring semester, this class will focus on virtual residencies.

 

7-8 Dance Technique and Choreography (DAN150)

Deepen your dance performance and dance making skills in this course. Gain flexibility, coordination, strength, expressiveness and dance vocabulary while discovering healthy ways of moving. Learn a wide range of choreographic tools and structures to create complex and meaningful dances inspired by inspired by works of art, music, literature, personal narrative, and other themes. No previous dance experience is necessary but an interest in developing dance and choreography skills is a must!

7-8 Hip Hop Dance (DAN128)

Dance in the tradition of B-boys and B-girls. Learn about the culture, dance steps, and music of the hip hop tradition through freestyle dancing, specific styles and techniques plus choreography. Learn a wide range of hip hop vocabulary and skills in a course emphasizing individual work, floor work, partner work, and choreography.

 

7-8 Intro to African Dance and Drumming (DAN100)

This class provides an introduction to West African dance, rhythms and chants. Students learn connections in African dance and music forms while connecting their own bodies, breath and sound. Students explore traditional dances from Guinea, West Africa. Drummers learn traditional rhythms, hand techniques and positions, and take part in the powerful interaction between movement and music.

7-8 Salsa Dance (DAN119)

Like most Latin dances, Salsa has a number of variations, a testament to its origins as of many different styles. Salsa classes all start with footwork and basic dance moves geared towards social dancing. The goal is to get everyone comfortable with basic dance fundamentals and then apply them to Salsa music. Beginner classes are fun and filled with patience, repetition and practice. Beginner classes are suitable for people who have never danced Salsa and those wanting to strengthen their fundamentals.

Improve your cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles, and develop greater coordination and flexibility through a variety of workout models. Learn a wide range of yoga postures as well as techniques to calm the mind to help reduce stress. This class offers a fun, non-competitive workout designed to strengthen your entire body, and develop a healthy self image.

7th ArtsCore (ART100)

ArtsCore is a yearlong required course for all PVPA students in grade 7. Students rotate through short courses focused on dance, music, theater, and visual arts, and engage in activities focused on creative collaboration, exploration, and skill-building in each discipline.

 

African Dance & Drumming 1 (DAN152)

This section of the combined African dance and drumming class focuses on the study of West African dance, rhythms and chants. Students learn and perfect African dance and music forms while connecting to their own bodies, breath and sound. Students increase technical proficiency and knowledge in traditional dances from Guinea and other countries in western Africa.

Arts Teaching Assistant for Middle School Classes

Credit Type: School Service AND Arts
Prerequisites: Teacher approval (form available)

High school students may arrange to assist in a middle school arts class in which they have significant experience with the discipline. This is an opportunity to earn school service credit AND arts credit in that discipline. Prior teacher permission is required. TAs are expected to check in with the cooperating teacher regularly, participate fully in each class, model class expectations, assist in supporting students and the teacher whenever possible, and engage in pre-planning if taking a lead role as teacher. Students may arrange informal teaching assistant roles within high school arts classes by speaking with the instructor; however, they are enrolled in the class itself in order to earn arts credits.

Catalyst Dance Company (DAN153)

Catalyst Dance Company is a required yearlong course for members. Catalyst showcases innovative student choreography, and presents high-caliber works of guest choreographers and PVPA faculty. Catalyst is dedicated to versatility; the techniques practiced and performance works presented range in styles from contemporary modern dance, improvisation, ballet, and jazz to hip hop and more. Dancers focus on the advanced training necessary to excel in a dance career, and develop an in-depth understanding of choreography as well as technical training and performance experience. Catalyst dancers create sophisticated choreography, practice dance industry-established critique and response methods to elevate work to the highest level, and study the dance artists throughout time to root our practice in a historical context. The company performs in formal and informal PVPA productions and outreach events throughout the year, and has their own annual spring dance concert. Additional mandatory rehearsals will be held after school two days per week on days to be decided.

 

Choreography Lab (DAN142)

Deepen your improvisation and choreography skills as you create complex and meaningful dance in this course focused on experimenting with different structured improvisation models and choreographic devices and forms. Work both independently and in small groups to create dances inspired by different themes, such as art, literature, personal narrative and choreographic forms and structures.

Dance Technique 1 (DAN146)

This class provides students with strong foundational skill in dance technique in ballet and modern/contemporary genres. Students focus on deepened practice in technical skills, and improve anatomical awareness of appropriate body alignment while dancing. Through practice in ballet, students learn the fundamentals of barre and center work, ballet vocabulary, and ballet skills. In modern contemporary technique, students practice floor work, fall and recovery, and releasing weight and harnessing gravity for efficient movement patterns. Dancers also practice and explore improvisation, finding confidence and enjoyment through movement. A holistic approach towards becoming a knowledgeable dance artist will include individual and collaborative projects in dance research and analysis. Students are expected to have an interest in improving their dance technique and expanding their dance experiences. Prior dance experience is recommended.

 

Dance Technique 2 (DAN114)

Prerequisites: Current or former member of Catalyst, or Dance Tech 2, or interview

This course emphasizes increasing technical proficiency and knowledge of dance history and methods of analysis and critique. Dancers will work towards improving anatomical awareness, and developing deeper understanding of the skills and principles required in the professional field of ballet and contemporary/modern concert dance. Students will improve body placement and alignment in complex and extended ballet sequences during barre and center work, and build skills in contemporary/modern dance techniques of fall and recovery, release, floor work, and inversions, as well as improvisational skills and choreographic projects. A holistic approach towards becoming a knowledgeable dance artist will individual and collaborative projects in dance research and analysis. Students at this level must be competent at the intermediate to advanced level, and ready to perform longer and more complex movement sequences that approach a higher level of performance ability.

Hip Hop Dance 1 (DAN127)

Hip hop is an awareness with historical roots and unique dance movements. Learn about the history and culture of hip hop, and its influence on today’s hip hop scene.This is a fun, energetic class designed to develop a basic foundation in hip hop movements and sequences. Throughout the semester, dancers learn hip hop movements in a variety of styles, and learn how to improvise with enthusiasm and confidence. Students are expected to choreograph their own hip hop dances, and collaborate with their peers.

 

Hip Hop Dance 2 (DAN155)

Prerequisites: 7-8 Hip Hop Dance, Hip Hop Dance 1, or Funkadelic

Hip hop is an awareness with historical roots and unique dance movements. Hip Hop 2 is designed for students with experience in hip hop dance who want to deepen their knowledge of techniques, history and culture of hip hop, and its influence on today’s hip hop scene. This is a more advanced class designed to build upon the foundation in hip hop movements and sequences, and develop more fluency in the execution and performance of multiple styles of hip hop. Throughout the semester, dancers learn intricate and challenging choreography in a variety of styles, and how to improvise freely in each style with enthusiasm and confidence. Students are expected to choreograph their own hip hop dances, and collaborate with their peers.

Jazz Dance (DAN129)

Explore the roots, influences, and unique vocabulary of different styles of jazz dance that have developed throughout the ages. Practice movement fundamentals through daily technique work, choreography, and the study of jazz masterworks. Deepen your knowledge of the history of jazz dance by participating in engaging research projects in order to understand the evolution of jazz from its origins to the present. Students at this level must be competent at the intermediate level, eager to learn, and ready to perform longer and more complex movement sequences that approach a higher level of performance ability.

 

Latin Fusion Dance (DAN137)

Latin Fusion is a combination of Latin and Modern Jazz. This is a common form of dance used in musical productions with its roots in social dance and is heavily influenced by African-American traditions. Students learn basic techniques based on ballet and modern dance. Musicality and performance skills are taught through a series of dance combinations. Other styles incorporated include Urban Latin Jazz, Bachata, Merengue and Salsa.

Wofa African Drum and Dance Company (DAN160)

Wofa African Drum and Dance Company is a required yearlong course for members. Perfect African dance forms while connecting to your own body, breath and sound. Increase technical proficiency and knowledge in traditional dances from Guinea and other countries in western Africa. All students take part in the powerful interaction between movement and music. The company performs at multiple venues throughout the year.

 

Yoga (DAN167)

Yoga has its roots in ancient India and has evolved into a highly popular form of exercise in American culture. Enjoy a yoga class that combines basic Hatha postures with meditation, pranayama (breathing) and flowing movements designed to improve strength, flexibility, coordination and deepen a feeling of relaxation and serenity. Learn a wide range of yoga postures as well as techniques to calm the mind to help reduce stress and leave one feeling present and refreshed. Mats are provided.
